Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas criticized the US veto of a Palestinian request for full United Nations membership, branding it a "blatant aggression" against the Palestinian people and contrary to the desires of the international community.
Abbas asserted, "The United States has violated all international laws and has broken all the promises it talks about regarding the two-state solution and achieving peace in the region." He added that the current American administration not only reneged on promises but also enabled Israel to undermine the Palestinian National Authority.
According to Abbas, the positions taken by US President Joe Biden's administration have sparked "unprecedented anger" among Palestinians and in the region, potentially leading to greater instability and bolstering terrorism.
Following the US veto of the resolution on Thursday, State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel emphasized that premature actions in New York would not lead to statehood for Palestinians, citing the UN headquarters' location.
Palestinian efforts for full member state recognition began in 2011, with their current status being a non-member observer state since November 2012.
It's worth noting that the US lacks an official diplomatic relationship with the Palestinian Authority.
