Former Wales rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit has made a surprising move to join back-to-back Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 23-year-old attracted interest from several NFL franchises, including the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, and Denver Broncos.
In a video message, Rees-Zammit greeted the Chiefs Kingdom, expressing his excitement: "Hi Chiefs Kingdom, Louis Rees-Zammit here. Just signed, can't wait to go and see you all at Arrowhead."
Part of the 2024 international player pathway (IPP), Rees-Zammit aims for a hybrid role, playing both wide receiver and running back.
His next challenge is securing a spot on the regular-season roster after leaving Welsh rugby earlier this year to pursue an NFL career.
As one of 16 players in the 2024 IPP, Rees-Zammit underwent a 10-week crash course to develop the necessary skills for NFL success. Scouts from all 32 NFL teams observed his skills at University of South Florida's Pro Day.
While not excelling in all metrics, his speed impressed, meeting NFL wide receiver standards.
Competing in the off-season squad, Rees-Zammit aims for a spot on Kansas City's final 53-man roster for the 2024 season. If not selected, he may join the practice squad.
Rees-Zammit's joining the Chiefs marks a significant milestone, with NFL rule changes providing opportunities for IPP players. He could contribute as a kick returner due to his attributes aligning with the position's requirements.
