Referee Jarred Gillett is set to wear a head-mounted camera during Monday night's Premier League match between Crystal Palace and Manchester United. The camera, integrated into the usual referee communications system, aims to provide a unique perspective on the game, offering viewers an inside look at the challenges and decisions referees face during high-stakes matches.
However, the Premier League clarified that footage from the camera will not be broadcast live. Instead, it will be part of a program to be released later this year, designed to offer "further insight and education into the demands of officiating" at the top level of football. This initiative could provide valuable understanding of the referee's role and the pressures they encounter in a Premier League fixture.
The use of this head-mounted camera has been approved by the game's lawmakers, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), along with the Premier League, Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), and the involved clubs, Crystal Palace and Manchester United. The Premier League expressed gratitude to both clubs for their cooperation and support for this innovative project.
